Financial tips

The right way to receive payments from abroad in Colombia depends on three things: how your client is set up to pay you, how fast you need the funds, and whether you plan to spend that money with a card afterward. Freelancers billing overseas clients, remote employees paid in USD or EUR, and small businesses invoicing international customers all run into the same core question — not which platform is "best" in the abstract, but which one costs the least on their specific payment route and gives them access to the money the way they actually need it.

This guide compares four platforms freelancers and small businesses in Colombia use to receive international payments — VIIO, Littio, Wise, and Payoneer — on account and card fees, transfer costs, delivery times, identity-verification requirements, and business-account features.

Editorial note: VIIO is one of the providers compared below. Every figure in this article is sourced directly from each provider's published pricing pages (see Sources), so you can verify them independently before deciding.

The tables already show the pattern: if your client can pay through a local transfer in dollars or euros, Wise and Payoneer arrive with no entry fee, while VIIO now competes on that same route with a 0.3% fee through its U.S. and European virtual accounts. For a traditional SWIFT wire, VIIO charges USD 30 plus 0.3%, arriving in an estimated 3 to 5 business days. If you'd rather hold funds in a stable digital currency and spend directly with a card in Colombia or abroad, VIIO and Littio are built for that use case. And if your business needs a full account — not just a way to receive payments — all four offer a business tier, though with different scopes.

VIIO — best for spending digital dollars, not just receiving them

In short: VIIO settles in USDC, charges a 0.3% fee on local-transfer receipts (or USD 30 + 0.3% on SWIFT wires), and pairs the account with a Visa card for spending in Colombia and abroad.

VIIO operates on USDC and issues a physical and virtual Visa card backed directly by the network. Per VIIO's published rates, the account and card carry no maintenance fee, and withdrawals to Colombian pesos, US dollars, euros, British pounds, Canadian dollars, Australian dollars, or Mexican pesos are currently fee-free. Card issuance is free; a replacement card, or an initial card purchase if the account doesn't meet the minimum balance, costs USD 5.

VIIO offers two ways to receive payments from abroad. The first is a virtual account in the United States and Europe with a 0.3% fee on the amount received, letting clients pay as if you held a local account. The second is a traditional SWIFT wire transfer, at USD 30 plus 0.3%, arriving in an estimated 3 to 5 business days.

Identity verification follows a standard KYC/KYB process — government ID, proof of address, and source-of-funds verification. One practical advantage: a single verification covers both VIIO's own services and those of its operating partners, so users aren't re-verified for each one.

For businesses, VIIO's account includes a local U.S. virtual account for receiving USD transfers, payments to overseas suppliers, and fund disbursement in COP or USD from one platform. Eligibility depends on the company's industry, compliance review, and VIIO's banking-partner requirements — some sectors may need additional due diligence, and some may not qualify. Customer assets are held in custody via Fireblocks, the institutional-grade custody infrastructure used by banks, and transactions are monitored with Chainalysis for risk and compliance purposes.

Best for: freelancers and businesses already comfortable holding digital dollars, frequent card spenders in Colombia and abroad, or companies that want a U.S. account and cross-border payments on one platform.

Littio — comparable to VIIO, with a broader stablecoin lineup

In short: Littio runs on its own stablecoin ecosystem — USDC, EURC, COPM, and MXNT — with free account and card maintenance, but a 2% conversion fee outside those four currencies.

Littio built its own stablecoin ecosystem — USDC, EURC, COPM (Colombian peso), and MXNT (Mexican peso) — with 1:1 conversion between them. Deposits in USDT and DAI via Polygon are also accepted, at a 1% fee.

There's no account or card maintenance fee, but Littio applies a 2% charge on purchases in currencies outside USD, EUR, COP, or MXN, plus a flat $6,180 COP per ATM withdrawal in Colombia. The physical Mastercard has a USD 3 shipping fee.

Identity verification runs entirely in-app in a few minutes — email, phone number, personal details, ID document, and a facial-verification selfie. Littio states that user funds are backed by USD and US Treasury bonds held at partner banks, with every transaction recorded on-chain.

For Colombian businesses, Littio offers international payment reception and automated payroll disbursement in USD, EUR, and COP, with a flat USD 3 fee per transaction and a rate set $100 COP below spot.

Best for: businesses and individuals converting frequently between pesos, euros, and dollars inside one stablecoin ecosystem, or companies running multi-currency payroll.

Wise — the simplest option when a client already pays in dollars or euros

In short: Wise is a multi-currency account with local receiving details in 8+ currencies. Most incoming transfers are free, and currency conversion uses the mid-market rate.

Wise isn't a stablecoin platform or a prepaid card — it's a multi-currency account with local bank details in more than 8 currencies, including USD, EUR, and GBP. That lets a client pay as if you were a resident of their own country, without routing through SWIFT.

Receiving money is free across most currencies and payment methods. The one fixed fee Wise documents applies to USD wire transfers. Conversions use the mid-market exchange rate with no hidden markup, and Wise discloses the exact fee and amount before you confirm. Sign-up is online with no maintenance cost, and you can hold a balance in 40+ currencies, including Colombian pesos, and transfer to a Colombian bank account whenever needed.

Delivery time depends on the route and the sender's payment method — many transfers land the same day, though some take up to 2–3 business days.

Best for: freelancers and employees already paid by bank transfer in dollars, euros, or pounds who'd rather hold the funds in that currency than convert automatically to pesos.

Payoneer — the standard for freelance marketplaces like Upwork and Fiverr

In short: Payoneer integrates directly with Upwork, Fiverr, and similar marketplaces. Account-to-account transfers are free, but ATM withdrawals and peso conversion carry some of the highest fees in this comparison.

Payoneer is the most directly integrated option for freelance marketplaces — Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon, and direct clients can all pay into it with no extra setup. Transfers between Payoneer accounts are free; ACH payments from U.S. clients carry a 1% fee, and card payments through a payment request can run as high as 3.99%.

Withdrawing in the same currency as your balance (USD to a dollar account, for example) costs a flat USD 1.50, for withdrawals up to USD 50,000 per month. Converting to Colombian pesos on withdrawal raises the fee to up to 2% above the market rate. The prepaid Mastercard charges USD 3.15 per ATM withdrawal. There's a USD 29.95 annual fee, waived once you receive more than USD 2,000 in a year — a threshold most active freelancers clear easily.

Best for: freelancers paid primarily through Upwork, Fiverr, or similar platforms who want payments to land directly in an account already built for that workflow.

What you'll need to receive payments from abroad

All four platforms require identity verification before you can receive funds. In general, expect to provide:

  • A valid government-issued ID
  • A selfie or facial verification (VIIO, Littio)
  • Proof of address (VIIO)
  • Local bank details or an account number, depending on the platform
  • Proof of economic activity, for business accounts

None of the four requires a registered company to open a personal freelancer account.

Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest way to receive a payment from a U.S. client? If your client can pay through a local transfer in dollars, Wise and Payoneer charge no entry fee, and VIIO charges 0.3% through its U.S. virtual account. For a traditional SWIFT wire, VIIO charges USD 30 plus 0.3%. If you'd rather receive in a stablecoin and spend directly with a card, VIIO and Littio charge no maintenance fee, though both apply fees depending on how you convert or withdraw.

Do I need a Colombian bank account to use any of these platforms? Not necessarily. VIIO, Littio, and Payoneer all let you operate without linking a traditional bank account, though you can link one later to withdraw in pesos if you prefer.

Which option is best for a business account, not just a personal one? All four offer some version of a business account. VIIO's includes a U.S. virtual account within the same business account; Littio offers multi-currency payroll disbursement; Wise Business provides local receiving details in multiple currencies; Payoneer is built more for freelancers and marketplace sellers than for complex business operations.

Which platform delivers funds the fastest? Payments between Payoneer accounts are instant. Wise varies by route but often lands the same day. An initial USDC or USDT deposit to VIIO or Littio typically takes minutes, depending on the blockchain network used. Receiving via SWIFT through VIIO takes an estimated 3 to 5 business days.

How does VIIO protect customer funds? VIIO holds customer assets in custody through Fireblocks, the institutional-grade infrastructure used by banks, and monitors transactions with Chainalysis for risk and compliance purposes. Opening an account requires a KYC/KYB identity check, including government ID, proof of address, and source-of-funds verification.
